MACULAR DEGENERATION

MACULAR DEGENERATION IS AN AGE-RELATED EYE CONDITION AFFECTING THE CENTRAL RETINA CALLED THE MACULA, WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DETAILED CENTRAL VISION.

Most AMD are dry forms, meaning no bleeding has occurred, only deposits of material invading the macula. Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in the macula, where they filter blue light and protect tissue from these invading effects. AMD is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 60. Symptoms include gradual loss of central objects, gradual loss of color vision, and crooked or wavy lines. Treatment includes home monitoring with an Amsler grid for changes, vitamin supplements, and laser surgery for bleeding.

Risk factors include age, race, smoking, family history, and light colored eyes.

  • Avocados have seven times the lutein of other green leafy veggies, also 18 times the beta-carotene as carrots and other veggies. Both lutein and beta carotene are essential for health vision.

  • Omega 3 fatty acids, found in salmon, tuna, and nuts, can help protect against the progression of macular degeneration. Our bodies do not produce omega 3’s.

  • Orange and yellow-hued veggies, such as peppers and squash, and green leafy veggies, such as kale and spinach, contain carotenoids, a pigment our body converts to vitamin A.

  • Too many saturated, monosaturated and polyunsaturated fats increase one’s risk of developing AMD.

  • A diet that includes more foods with significant levels of omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish and soybeans, could tremendously reduce their risk for developing neovascular (wet) AMD.

  • Individuals who had higher levels of serum vitamin D were less likely to develop early dry AMD.

  • Inflammation and swelling of the blood vessels in the retina can promote some forms of AMD, but increased intakes of vitamin D rich foods, such as milk and shitake mushrooms, could reduce the swelling. Also try tuna, salmon, sardines, and cod liver oil.

  • Smokers should avoid excessive amounts of beta carotene due to the increase risk of developing lung cancer.

For better Macular Degeneration health, we recommend the following vitamins:

  • Fish Oil / Flaxseed : 1000-2000mg/Day

  • Lutein: 12-20mg/Day. AREDS FORMULATION
